KSHEC Centres of Excellence
The Kerala State Higher Education Council (KSHEC) has proposed the establishment of several Centres of Excellence (CoEs) to advance teaching, research, innovation, and inclusivity in higher education. These centres are designed to operate under KSHEC with structured administration, expert advisory boards, and targeted academic and community engagement programmes.
Centre for Indigenous People’s Education (CIPE)
The CIPE is envisioned as a transformative initiative based in Wayanad, Kerala, aimed at addressing the educational, cultural, and linguistic needs of the state’s indigenous communities. With Wayanad having the highest tribal population in Kerala—including groups like the Paniya, Kurichya, Kuruma, and Adiya—CIPE seeks to overcome the systemic barriers these communities face in accessing quality, culturally responsive education. The centre will serve as a platform for inclusive learning, empowering tribal populations through education that both respects and revitalizes their cultural identities.
Kerala Language Network (KLN)
KLN proposes the creation of a Centre of Excellence for Languages to promote linguistic diversity, cultural integration, and research in Kerala. It aims to strengthen the teaching and learning of regional, national, and international languages using modern pedagogical methods, cutting-edge technology, and interdisciplinary approaches. The centre will foster multilingualism and work towards preserving Kerala’s linguistic heritage.
Kerala Institute for Science, Technology, and Innovation (KISTI)
KISTI will function as an autonomous Centre of Excellence under the Department of Higher Education, focused on enhancing Kerala’s research ecosystem in advanced scientific fields. It will serve as a hub for innovation, collaboration, and knowledge creation in areas such as AI, sustainability, and emerging technologies. By connecting faculty, researchers, students, and industry, KISTI aims to promote cutting-edge research, specialized education, and capacity-building for the state’s academic and professional advancement.
Centre of Excellence in Teaching Learning and Training (CETLT)
The CETLT aims to improve the quality of higher education by offering continuous professional development for faculty and staff, supporting student learning, and enhancing curriculum design. Through targeted pedagogical training and the integration of educational technologies, the centre will cultivate a culture of excellence in teaching and learning across Kerala’s academic institutions.
Kerala Institute of Advanced Studies (KIAS)
KIAS will be an autonomous research centre focused on social sciences, humanities, arts, and languages. It aims to become a premier hub for interdisciplinary scholarship, bringing together leading researchers from Kerala and around the world. KIAS will promote critical inquiry into Kerala’s society, history, and culture while engaging with global academic conversations and challenges.
Kerala Network for Research-Support in Higher Education (KNRSHE)
KNRSHE is designed to support faculty and researchers—particularly in colleges—by facilitating access to research funding, infrastructure, and collaboration. The centre will assist in proposal writing, equipment maintenance, and building a shared network of research facilities across institutions. It encourages partnerships among academia, government, and industry, and aims to establish centralised instrumentation and computational facilities for researchers throughout the state.
Kerala Institute for Gender Equality (KIGE)
KIGE is envisioned as a dedicated centre to advance gender equality through research, policy support, and advocacy. Based in Kozhikode, it aims to address systemic inequalities in public services and governance by promoting gender mainstreaming across all stages of policymaking. The institute will serve as a resource hub, sharing data, tools, and best practices with institutions across Kerala, India, and beyond to support inclusive and equitable development.
